The experiences of the parents of five children, ranging from 4 to 9 years of age, were explored by interviewing five mothers and one father using an open ended questionnaire to aid a narrative recollection of the child's lives and their interactions. Using grounded theory as the method and symbolic interactionism as a theoretical perspective, the parental responses were interpreted within the context of the parents' interactional histories prior to the child's birth, and interactions with the child, their partner, their families and the health care professionals.
